Communication in the maritime sector is extremely important. The need to call for help when in trouble, speak to harbour and marina masters, or communicating with other ships make PMRs a necessity.

While smaller vessels can usually find a handheld very high frequency (VHF) radio sufficient to meet their needs, it is advisable for larger ships to use fixed radios, as they can communicate further due to their larger power outputs.

When buying a radio set, think about exactly what you’ll need it for. For example, if you’re just buying it for a jet-ski, a handheld PTT device with a long battery life might be an idea.

Please ensure that you have a Marine Radio Short range Certificate before using a marine VHF.
